Accidents happen, and dental pain doesn’t wait for business hours. But not every dental problem needs to be treated as a five-alarm emergency, and knowing the difference can save you an unnecessary late-night trip, or worse, keep you from getting help fast enough when you actually need it.
Dental Emergencies We Treat
At Smiles On the Bay, common emergencies include tooth abscesses, severe or persistent toothaches, cracked or broken teeth, dislodged or knocked-out teeth, swollen oral tissue, dry socket following an extraction, and lost fillings or crowns. Dental bleeding that won’t stop on its own also falls into this category.
Why Timing Matters So Much
Some dental emergencies are far more time-sensitive than others. A knocked-out permanent tooth has a narrow window, generally 12 to 24 hours, where prompt treatment gives you the best chance of a successful outcome. Waiting even a day can significantly change what’s possible. Persistent, severe pain is another signal that shouldn’t be ignored, since it can indicate an infection that gets more serious the longer it goes untreated.
What to Do in the First Few Minutes
If a tooth gets knocked out, try to keep it moist, either back in the socket if possible or in milk, and get to the office as quickly as you can. For a cracked or broken tooth, rinse your mouth gently and avoid chewing on that side until you’re seen. For a lost filling or crown, avoiding very hot, cold, or sticky foods can help manage sensitivity until your appointment.
Dental Emergency or Medical Emergency?
Not every urgent situation belongs at the dentist’s office. If you’re dealing with facial or jaw trauma involving possible fractures, uncontrolled bleeding, or anything that could be life-threatening, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room first. For dental-specific issues like a severe toothache, a knocked-out tooth, or a cracked restoration, our office is equipped to help right away.
How We Handle Emergency Visits
Dr. Jake Thompson and our team use the same advanced technology for emergency visits as we do for scheduled care, so you’re not getting a lesser version of treatment just because it’s urgent. Depending on the issue, treatment might involve anything from a same-day repair to a more involved procedure like oral surgery or, further down the line, a dental implant if a tooth can’t be saved. Sedation options are also available if pain or anxiety is making the visit harder to get through.
If cost is a concern in the middle of an unplanned emergency, we also offer insurance and financing options, including Cherry Financing, so getting treated quickly doesn’t have to wait on figuring out the bill first.
When It’s Not Quite an Emergency, But Still Needs Attention
Mild sensitivity, a small chip that isn’t causing pain, or a filling that feels slightly off aren’t necessarily emergencies, but they’re still worth scheduling a visit for soon rather than waiting for your next routine checkup through general dentistry. When in doubt, it’s always better to call and ask than to guess.
Don’t Wait If Something Feels Wrong
If you’re dealing with a dental emergency, contact our office right away. If you’re unsure whether what you’re experiencing qualifies, call anyway, our team can help you figure out the right next step.
